About Bullies: Q&A

Bully Tales: Story

Sunny with 6-month old Gwyn 8-24-04
Well, I never really had to wean Sunny from his tennis balls. Like most other Bullies he is strange from week to week. He just stopped playing with them all of a sudden. Now, they are quietly resting in the corner of the living room growing

dust bunnies. Every once in a while he will glance over at them and get a spark in his eye for a moment. Then, he will just roll over and go back to sleep.

He hasn’t done much of anything lately. Actually, he really hasn’t done anything--he hasn’t even wanted to really play. He just sleeps and walks around occasionally, trying to steal a toy from the baby. Gwyn has a saucer she sits in and it has toys all around it. Whenever I leave the room Sunny is determined to put a new teeth mark somewhere on it. So, her little bouncer is adorned with little holes in all the plastic toys. I know it’s kind of gross, but I can’t keep the two of them apart. She is bound to eventually ingest a gallon or so of Sunny’s slobber. I think that’s OK--I have to tell myself that. She is only building her immune system that way. Every time she sticks something gross in her mouth, it is making her in reality a bit healthier. Geez, imagine when she starts crawling!

Gwyn gets angry at Sunny. She showed her first real emotion to him last week. He kept trying to lick her in the face like always, and she finally made a loud screech and acted like she was trying to lash out at him. It was cute. I think he gets on her nerves right now. I mean all he ever wants to do is lick her face and sniff her butt. Sometimes when she is sitting on the couch he will just put his head on the cushion and stare at her. But, then other times he jumps right up on her like he is just a wad of cotton candy instead of a 65lb dog.

Oh, that brings me to a story. Last week Hubby took Sunny to get his nails clipped. The vet came into the room and said she wanted to talk to him because Sunny’s weight was getting out of control! She said he should still be the same weight that he was at one year which was 45lbs! Can you believe how stupid that sounds? Bullies are not done growing until at least three years and for her to say Sunny was fat??? It just shows you how little the vets here know about Bullies. He just said, “Yeah whatever” and left. She wanted us to cut him back to one cup of food a day! He would starve!!!

Sunny has been staying outside more this past week. He usually hates the outside, but he has actually been begging to go out. This also means his grass allergy has really been acting up. Every time he lies in the grass he gets little bumps. Then, they ooze and after a couple of days the hair falls out where they were. But, he doesn’t itch them so I guess they don’t bother him much. He doesn’t ever stray out of my sight, which is good. We have a fence, and I don’t think he could ever get out, but I like him to stay near the patio so I can keep an eye on him. I’m always worried someone might steal my baby.

Speaking of, Gwyn is now 6 months old and is growing like a little Bully pup. She is a very happy but small baby. She is only 13lbs as of last month. She is very active, and I think she might crawl soon. Oh, what will I do with Sunny then? How do you teach a bull in a china shop to be gentle? Life calls.
