About Bullies: Q&A

Bully Tales: Story

Sunny with Gwyn 3-14-04
I know it has been so long since I have updated my Sunny diary but my life has been consumed with a new baby and I haven’t had a second to write. Sunny had a sister born 2-24-04. Her name is Gwyneth Kathleen. She came into the world after only a couple of pushes and was absolutely the most beautiful baby ever. She was 6lbs,
12oz and 19in long. The first few days were very rough because I had a painful recovery and Gwyn was a very hungry little girl in the beginning. When we came home from the hospital things were a lot better for the both of us. Every day with her is totally amazing, and I never knew it was possible to love someone this much. She is everything we could of dreamed of and more. So far I have been right about what I thought all along about Bullies and babies and that is that it is much harder to raise a Bully than a baby. It has been much easier with her so far!

So Sunny is totally in love with this sister of his. The first few days he only saw her through the wire of the baby gate. He was so thrilled and wanted to meet her so bad but he was so excited and she was so small so I didn’t see it as a good idea. Sunny would sit by the bedroom door just waiting for it to open for a split second so he could get a glimpse of her.

It has now been almost three weeks since her birth and Sunny is still very much in love with her. I can now bring Gwyn into the living area and sit in the glider with her. Sunny will sit at my feet and try and get his big Bully nose right in her face. But he is a little rough with that so I have to keep reminding him to stay down and off. He is getting better everyday and I think maybe in a month or so she will be big enough to be sniffed all over by Sunny.

Sunny has developed a very bad habit in the last two months. He pees in his crate almost every night. We still don’t have any idea why. He drinks his water early at night and we take him to potty right before bed and first thing in the morning but he still floods his crate. The bad thing about it is that he is lying in it. I can’t stand this problem because it is very nasty and nobody wants a dog on the couch that has been lying in his pee all night. So, he has to get a lot of baths lately. I think we have decided to take his pad out of his crate at night. I think if he had to pee directly on the plastic then maybe he wouldn’t do it. I hate to think of him sleeping on the hard crate floor but I can’t deal with him peeing in it anymore. I hope eventually he stops doing this, but I really feel that we are in for a long battle with that.

Sunny is otherwise happy, I think, but he doesn’t get nearly as much attention as he used to. I feel very guilty about that, but I can’t really worry too much about it right now as I have my hands full. I am so lucky to have my husband to take care of him. I mean, I have to take care of him and the baby all day but at least he is here at night to play with him. Sunny loves his daddy more than anyone else in the world. They play for hours every night. But still, it is not the same for him. I am sure it has been so tough on the little guy to deal with all these changes. He used to get out of the house every single day, go to work with me, see people, and go on walks. Now, he sits indoors all day and since it’s cold and I have a newborn, I can’t take him on walks like I used to. I can’t wait till it gets a little warmer and then I can strap Gwyn in her stroller and put on Sunny’s leash and we can stroll the neighborhood everyday!

Now that spring is getting close Sunny has started to get his allergies again. This time last year his hair started falling out and he got bumps all over his skin. I noticed when my hubby gave him a bath today that those bumps are coming back. I sure hope it doesn’t get as bad as last year but at least now I know it is seasonal allergies and not food allergies. Last year everyone suggested it was because I did not have him on a raw food diet, and I had worried and thought about trying that but now I can see it has nothing to do with his food.
